How to break down your goals into habits
If you don’t have time to read the article above, then listen to the podcast above, and if you don’t have time for that either (this is a demanding time of year after all – I get that) go straight to the below!!
1. Think about a goal you wish to pursue in 2023. Take your goal and break it down into bite-sized habits - what actions do you need to perform that are one time single actions and what needs to happen each day to achieve your goal? For example say your goal was to start writing a book, the actions you need to take each day may be to write 500 words. Or if your goal was to run a marathon the actions you might need to take each day could be to run x distance, do x amount of strength training to support your running. And one-time single actions could be to understand which marathon you want to run and with whom as a starting point.
2. Ask yourself what feels easiest to start with/what feels most fun? Where you can put the actions in order of ease/fun – and start with the easiest. If you feel confident you can sustain that change after 1-2 weeks, move on to the next, and so on.
3. Write down when and where you plan on performing the habit you chose this week? E.g. after I boil the kettle for my 9am tea I will…
4. Feel good about making positive and sustainable changes to your health. Habits are a marathon, not a sprint, so celebrate building your endurance for the long haul.
